So, 6 months blogging and grateful for this wonderful community…

Hello you!

So I’m blogging 6 months now and have to say I’m so grateful ( wish I did it sooner, but hey ho here I am blogging)

Now, when I started out blogging, I was posting poetry I had saved from months earlier, would hit submit and off I went on my merry way. I never commented or visited other blogs (took me a while to thaw out really; confidence issues with my writing skills obviously). Then the comments started. I slowly started to get more confident, replying with a word or 2 ( now it’s all about crawling before walking isn’t it?) and then proper commenting on other blogs.

Do you know something? It’s been brilliant. Nobody is going to tear you apart with comments (unless you’re into heated debates) and the kindness and support on this wonderful journey makes it even that more enjoyable.

Enjoy it and remember: we are all on a “constant” journey of growth.

We are making sense of this world (especially during these times) and sharing your ideas, thoughts and advice helps to make sense a little bit more.

So what are the 3 things I’ve learned since starting to blog?

1. Blogging can be fun – stick with it, comment on other blogs, even just a little comment or like for that extra bit of encouragement and support for others.

2. Read up on blogging tips/advice: it helps. If like me it’s a hobby and a way to connect with fellow bloggers/writers, then don’t be putting too much pressure on yourself for having loads of followers. Just enjoy it and it’s great for brushing up on your writing skills too.

3. Use the tagging option in post settings, so your post can reach the bloggers you want to reach, and to share your stories/poetry/inspiration – whatever your niche is. Don’t focus too much on niche at the start, that will come and enjoy the process.

Blogging is full of encouragement, like minded and real people (non of this perfect social media portrayed life) when you read the material that suits ‘you’ that is.

Yes, there are times when it can feel overwhelming, and when it does, then take a little step back, recharge those batteries as your blog will “always” be there. Read up on blogging tips and remember “you have to crawl before you walk”. Something I’ve been learning more about lately. Try not to be too hard on yourself and take each step bit by bit.

Atlantic Coast of Ireland, fresh air and soaking up the outdoors…

I was brought up in Donegal;  surrounded by fields, stunning beaches, mountains, sheep and cows. Breathtaking views…

Now, If you asked me about the Atlantic Coast when I was a teen (dying to move away from the place) I would have described it differently… Something along the lines of ‘it’s so boring and I really can’t wait to move to the BIG city’. Oh yes I loved moving to the big city at 18, for college, work, meeting new people, the nightlife and all that jazz. I had a great time (the mountains, beaches, sheep – not a second thought was given)

The importance of the outdoors and appreciating the ‘simple things’

Here I am writing a blog post about the Atlantic Coast of Ireland, older and wiser (ok, that might be debatable) as I’m visiting my family for a few weeks and it’s been over a year since I was last home (Covid wouldn’t allow and I now live in England)

Seriously though, I look out at the mountains every morning, I walk the beach every single day with my hubbie and girls (you can always wrap up) and I breathe in that fresh air.

I make sure I instill the importance of the outdoors and it’s beauty to my little girls as they grow. They absolutely love the outdoors (I love watching them skip through the fields like little lambs) There is nothing like a walk in nature to blow away those cobwebs. How I took it all for granted when I was younger…

Social media, the dreaded scrolling and 5 tips to help you when a break is needed!

Ah yes, social media scrolling!

I deleted certain social media apps many years ago and have never looked back. Yes, I was the type that checked in everywhere, posted all those amazing photos – showing the perfect life? Smiling your little heart out (when in reality I was probably having a bad day). Reality? because there’s no such thing as the perfect social media portrayed life.

We all have good days, crappy days and when you look online at a perfect social media life on those crappy days it makes you feel worse, doesn’t it? Why post all the good stuff. Unfortunately its the way social media rolls these days.

Selfies:

Selfies are huge (something I was never into), especially with younger people and the pressure to look a certain way (lets not start on filters), could be damaging to your wellbeing. Heck, back in my teenage years (I’m 40) taking a picture meant waiting until the film was actually developed to see how you turned out!! That was ok as you weren’t obsessed on taking hundreds of photos for the perfect shot.

Reflecting:

During this pandemic it has been an eye opener for ‘everyone’ and to reflect on what really matters. Being honest, open and kinder to each other and most importantly yourself. We are all human at the end of the day and this pandemic has us re-evaluating what matters.

Social media as a supportive environment:

I only recently set up a poetry social media account to connect with other poets/writers to share our work.  A brilliant community of supportive and encouraging writers.  However, the scrolling addiction reared its ugly head yet again.

You see, the thing is, when you have apps on your phone, the handiness you have to just click on it: next thing you know you’re scrolling for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, it goes on – when initially you just wanted to have a quick look ( great exercise for the thumb, but not the brain). You’re sucked in – down that bloody rabbit hole you go.

On the other hand, however, social media is extremely beneficial for businesses, small businesses, promoting ideas and connecting
with communities for hobbies and also support. Its all about finding that balance and keeping the scrolling to a minimum.


Top 5 tips to curb your scrolling habits and what works for me.

1. Uninstall the apps from your phone.  I only have social media on my tablet now and only check in the evenings.

2. If  you dont want to uninstall apps from your phone turn the phone off – put it into a drawer or anywhere you dont have quick access to – and be mindful.

3. Turn off all those notifications.

4. Set yourself a time limit for social media use.

5.  Be aware of your habits when online. Always being mindful. Think to yourself is this really urgent?


Between portraying the perfect life, selfie obsessions and addictive scrolling habits: these five tips listed should help, if the scrolling gets a little bit out of hand, or you just need a social media break.

Go for a walk and absorb all that beauty. Read that book (the physical hardback/paper type)  instead of scrolling.  Partake in those hobbies you enjoy!

If Life Throws You Lemons..Bite Them! Leave the Lemonade Aside For Now!

So as the famous saying goes (no need to repeat it, as you know it quite well!!) I started saying it to my husband one day when this lockdown malarkey was losing its novelty. He quickly turned around, stopped me in my tracks, and as calm as you like said “bite the f*****s”😬🍋!! Well. It fairly brought me down from my unicorn clouds with a bang (will leave them to my two little girls)

Now, I’m not saying its a great motto to stick by. Sometimes ‘you’ just have to ‘bite’ those tangy, yellow oval fruits and see where those sour pulps and pips end up!

During Covid (I know) you find yourself at times giving the inspiration a little nudge and are like “pass me the gin”🍸. Lemons are great companions along with whatever tipple ‘you’ enjoy (In moderation, especially when you’re a mummy, otherwise, being Irish you’d drink the bottle).

Sometimes you just have to turn daunting situations into ‘humour’, to work through those sour pimpled bad boys. Until you work with them, slice them and put them into a glass of whatever gets you through those days,  when all you want to do is have a good old cry and a gin..

So…

A Limerick to Spur You on & how we Miss our Family & Friends

Limerick

Together we’re witty & wild
Loving our true inner child
Connections so strong
Oh its been too long
And that’s just putting it mild!!


Oh you do miss the banter (as we say in Ireland) with great friends and family. Its hard in lockdown – with all the restrictions in place and family/friends being spread out in different countries. But, all the funny moments and the memories are precious – making the much needed hug when all this is over, even more special!! A drink of choice over a video call will have to do for now, but thats ok.
